Here's a way to get your gallon of milk to last much longer. If your milk ever goes bad, this is for you. If it doesn't, you probably don't need to worry about this.
By reducing the vertical exposure of the opening and the amount of time the cap is off, you keep bacteria from entering the jug as easily. That keeps the milk fresher. At least that's what I'm led to believe. I just know it works.
Using this technique, I've gotten a gallon of milk to go two weeks past the expiration date on the jug. And it's not like I enjoy spoiled milk, either!
P.S. Make sure you put your milk right back into the fridge, too. Keeping it at the right temperature also extends its life.
